The pores on the underside of turkey tail mushrooms can differ in color depending on the species but are usually white or pale yellow. When it comes to identifying these types of mushrooms, experts often look for grouping characteristics since they often grow in clumps or clusters.

Is The Mushroom Surface Fuzzy?

Despite their name, turkey tail mushrooms are not associated with turkeys. The name likely comes from the fact that they often resemble the tail feathers of a turkey. One of the most distinguishing features of turkey tale mushrooms is their surface fuzz.

This fuzz is made up of tiny spores that help the mushroom reproduce. The spores are released into the air and can travel long distances before eventually settling on a suitable tree. Once they find a suitable host, the spores germinate and begin to grow.

  1. I really needed to know how to clean turkey tail mushrooms before eating them. I wanted to make tea, but I have been told that in order to be able to eat them you have to boil for 20 minutes, to kill off any worms, mold, mildew, etc. so my point is boiling them 20 minutes hopefully kills the nasty stuff, is this safe to drink? I mean, if you actually are foraging turkey tail, how do you clean them for consumption. Thank you.

    • Hi Hallie,

Thanks for stopping by! Boiling the turkey tail mushrooms for 20 minutes should kill off any potential harmful bacteria, worms, mold, mildew, etc. However, it’s always best to thoroughly wash them under running water first to remove any dirt, debris or surface contaminants, before boiling. If you have access to fresh, properly harvested and cleaned turkey tail mushrooms, boiling for 20 minutes should be safe for consumption in the form of tea.
